Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about CarJam — the free virtual aux cord that lets everyone in the car pick the music. No login, no ads, no downloads.

What is CarJam?

CarJam is a free virtual aux cord web app. It lets a group of people add songs to a single shared music queue from their own phones — no passing the phone around, no cables needed.

The host opens CarJam on the device connected to the car speaker, shares a 6-letter room code, and everyone in the car can search and add songs from their own phone in real time.

Is CarJam safe to use?

Yes. CarJam runs entirely in your browser and cannot access your files, contacts, camera, or microphone. It uses Firebase — Google's infrastructure — for real-time sync between devices.

No executable files, no APKs, no browser extensions. It's a standard website that happens to work like an app.

Do I need an account or login?

No account needed. CarJam uses Firebase Anonymous Authentication, which creates a temporary session ID automatically in the background. It never asks for your name, email, or password.

Your identity is 100% private. The only data stored is the song queue and party settings, which are automatically deleted 24 hours after the party ends.

Are there ads or downloads?

No ads. No downloads. CarJam is a Progressive Web App (PWA) that runs directly in your browser. There are no trackers, no data sales, and no intrusive ads.

You can optionally install it to your home screen for a native app experience — it adds an icon and loads faster, but it's completely optional.

How do I use CarJam?
  1. Host: Open carjam.unloko.site on the phone connected to the car speaker and tap Start a Party.
  2. Share: Share the 6-letter room code or copy the invite link and send it to everyone in the car.
  3. Add songs: Everyone opens the link on their own phone and can search YouTube and add songs to the live queue.
  4. Enjoy: Music plays from the host's phone through the car speaker. Guests can vote to skip songs they don't like.
Does it work without Spotify or Apple Music?

Yes. CarJam uses YouTube for playback, so no Spotify, Apple Music, or any other subscription is needed. Search any song directly in the app, paste a YouTube URL, or import an entire YouTube playlist.

YouTube Premium on the host device is recommended for ad-free playback, but not required.

Will the music stop when I lock my screen?

On Android, CarJam uses Picture-in-Picture and a persistent audio session to keep music playing when you switch apps or lock the screen.

For the most reliable background playback: install CarJam to your home screen (tap "Add to Home Screen" in your browser menu) and set Chrome's battery usage to "No restrictions" in your phone settings. This tells Android not to suspend the app.

On iOS, background audio from web apps is limited by Apple — this is a platform restriction, not a CarJam bug.

How is CarJam funded?

CarJam is a passion project by Unloko897. It has no ads and does not sell any data. It is supported entirely by optional community donations.

If CarJam saved you from an aux cord argument, consider buying the dev a coffee on Ko-fi ↗.

Can guests control the music?

The host controls what plays. Guests can add songs to the queue and vote to skip the current song (majority rules). The host can also optionally allow guests to pause and resume playback in the Settings panel.

The host can also set per-guest queue limits, maximum song lengths, and block duplicate songs.
